A new white paper on ensuring compliance when transporting cars and vans has been launched by the Vehicle Remarketing Association (VRA).
Called “Light Vehicle Transport Operations for Remarketing Businesses”, it has been written by Gary Xuereb, managing director at DMN Fleet Services and VRA board member.
The 12-page document includes sections on the responsibilities facing businesses when transporting vehicles, core best practices, Goods Vehicle Operator’s Licence, driver licence categories, the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence, insurance coverage and security of the load.
Gary said: “This paper outlines essential best practices for remarketing companies engaging third-party hauliers for vehicle transport. It emphasises the shared responsibility between the haulier or similar service provider, and the service user, such as automotive dealers and leasing companies, when it comes to upholding legal standards, ensuring public safety, and protecting brand reputation.
“The document explains how fundamental checks are needed regarding operator and driver licensing, adequate insurance coverage, correct load securing techniques, and ensuring appropriate vehicle and equipment suitability. Failure to conduct this due diligence creates substantial, financial and reputational risks.”
Philip Nothard, VRA chair, added; “The transportation of vehicles brings a wide range of challenges for remarketing businesses.
“Those using transporters with a low carrying capacity gross vehicle weight of 3,500kg or less face weight restrictions that may lead to overloading safety issues, while those over 3,500kg encounter an increased level of compliance statutory requirements and increases in running costs.
“The potential for non-compliant operations – including issues related to licensing, insurance, vehicle weight, load security and tachograph usage – are considerable. The white paper is designed to increase understanding of the issues involved and guide remarketing businesses through the risks.”
Philip added that the white paper followed on from a series on electric vehicles produced by the VRA last year.
“The white paper format allows us to produce expert briefings for our members covering essential subjects and is an important benefit of being part of the VRA.”
